My teaching approach
I aim to help aspiring violinists and violists find direction in their very own musical adventures and discoveries and to find their own musical voice. To accomplish this, I seek to build a true connection with my students.
I provide a strong focus on a solid technique, with special attention to creating the most natural physical posture and movement possible. Through establishing integrity in one's physical relationship with the instrument over time, there emerges a true and personal tone along with the physical ease, efficiency and dexterity that allows for freedom and true expression.
To empower students to learn by ear is an important aspect of my teaching, along with social playing and jamming. I feel these skills help nurture musicians who will want to keep playing throughout their lives in the long term.
As part of a well-rounded approach, I also provide students with tutoring in music literacy, music theory and sight reading.

ALL AGES 5+ and ALL WALKS OF LIFE!
I welcome both young people and adults as my students. For children, I like to make playing fun, introducing them to various types of folk music and other exciting tunes, using FiddleQuest and Suzuki methods. For more mature students the same can apply, but also I like to encourage each mature student to help direct the course of their own study by actively seeking music that inspires them.
---
REPERTOIRE
Along with classical repertoire, I can help students access many styles with tunes that suit their playing level and provide the right amount of challenge- Celtic, Balkan, American Folk, Scandinavian, bluegrass, jazz, Latin American, the list goes on. I aim to teach what I have learned of various styles while paying due respect to the musical traditions, and with awareness that each tradition can take years, if not lifetimes, to delve into fully.
In light of the BLM movement and with my own increasing awareness and continuing self-education about the need for equal representation in music, I have resolved to focus on diversifying our repertoire in meaningful and non-tokenistic ways, to create an even richer and satisfying repertoire for our students.
As well as offering diverse repertoire, I am thoroughly versed in the Suzuki method and will teach classical violin to a high level if it is the desired focus.

FIDDLEQUEST
Since 2020, many of my students and I have been using the teaching/learning online tool FiddleQuest, and we're really enjoying it.
It's method and ethos fits well with my view that wholistic and sustainable music making requires the skills of the ear and experience with social playing.
The building of these skills can open up the possibility for students to have adventures in jamming in any style of music, to explore improvisation as well as composition.
